Kees and Claire Hut
State-of-the-art backcountry hut located in Whistler’s backcountry
Overview
The Kees and Claire Hut is a brand new addition to the Whistler Backcountry scene, being the first of the proposed thee-hut loop to be completed along the famous Spearhead Traverse. Taking inspiration from European style alpine refuges, the Kees and Claire Hut is the most modern and trailbreaking backcountry ski touring cabin across the whole of Canada.
Complete with communal cooking facilities, composting toilets, a wood burning stove, communal common area, six sleeping areas and even a slightly touchy WiFi connection, it’s safe to say you aren’t slumming it here. A 2 to 4.5 hour ski tour (depending on weather and fitness levels) from the top of Whistler Mountain will allow you to drop off your bags and ski an immense number of classic Whistler backcountry ski lines that surround you.
Location
Located above Russet Lake (and the old Russet Lake shelter) on Whistler Mountain, you can reach the Kees and Claire Hute via Peak Chair and/or Harmony/Symphony chair. The ski tour to the hut is fairly simple, but it does require good fitness and navigation skills in case of bad weather. Of course when venturing out of resort you will need to have good knowledge of safe backcountry travel and/or a professional guide to access this hut as there is no avalanche control out here.
